Innovation in off-site construction
Shortlisted at this year’s Interbuild exhibition, the Schiedel Multi chimney system was praised for its innovation in off-site construction. Designed specifically for use in apartments this innovative new fluing system allows for up to ten room sealed boilers to be connected to one chimney. Compatible with the current trend in design and building techniques this, the latest concept in ceramic chimneys arrives on-site in prefabricated modular units.
Whether it’s for aesthetic reasons where unsightly flues protrude from each property, or when the appliance outlets have no access to an outside wall, the Schiedel Multi, which is a vertical flue system, overcomes both situations. Another major benefit for developers and end-users is the product’s low maintenance long-term design life.
Operating under negative pressure, the Schiedel Multi is a concentric air-flue gas system consisting of a ceramic pipe to take waste gases away and a surrounding concrete shaft to deliver combustion air to the appliance. The highest quality inner ceramic liners have a profiled surface for durability and performance, and the appliances are simply connected to the flue system with plug-in ceramic connectors into a concentric double pipe. The waste gases are safely discharged to the outside through the central flue manufactured from high quality ceramic liners. Increased appliance efficiency is created as the combustion air is preheated as it travels towards the appliance.
Schiedel’s Dennis Milligan said; “We’ve recently introduced the Multi System to satisfy the demand for single flues in small apartment blocks. The aesthetics of the building are vastly improved and the architect has far greater versatility of floor plans and room sizes due to appliances not requiring and outside wall. This is a new concept in ceramic chimneys and reduces construction time significantly. Basically, the compact design consists of a ceramic pipe to exhaust waste gases and a surrounding concrete shaft to deliver combusyion to the appliance”.
